In 1830 the U.S. government shifted its policy from one of trying to assimilate American Indians to one of relocating them and proceeded to drive seventeen thousand Cherokee people west of the Mississippi.

THEDA PERDUE is a professor of history at the University of Kentucky. She is the author or editor of eight books, including The Cherokee and Slavery and the Evolution of Cherokee Society, 1540-1866.

Michael D. Green (1941-2013), was Professor of History at the University of Kentucky and the author of The Politics of Indian Removal and The Creeks: A Critical Bibliography and other books on American Indians.
